Whitehorse, Yukon is a city full of history and culture. Discoveries in the area suggest that First Nations people have been living in this region for thousands of years. Of course, it was the Gold Rush in the late 1800s that truly put Whitehorse on the map.
Named for the White Horse Rapids, which were said to look like the mane of a horse, Whitehorse was officially named the capital of the Yukon Territory on April 1st, 1953. Unfortunately, the rapids can no longer be seen, as they have been buried below the Schwatka Lake following the completion of a hydroelectric dam in 1958.
2007 marks the first year that Whitehorse has hosted the Canada Games. They have however hosted the Canadian Arctic Winter Games numerous times, including 1972, 1980, 1986, 1992, and 2000.
