Highlights

David Greer earns Yukon first Gold of 2007 Canada Winter Games with decisive win in 10 km classic event. The 17 year old from Whitehorse and two time Canada Games athlete (cross-country skiing-07/cycling-05) pulled away from the field over the second lap to post a 53 second victory at the Mt. McIntyre ski trails. Greer borrowed a pair of skis from National Ski Team member and Whitehorse native, Graham Nishikawa after his coach suggested he thought an old pair of classic skis from 2002 might work well in the cold snow conditions.

Highlights

Marcia Birkigt, a 22 year old from Camrose, AB earned Alberta's first gold in the 7.5 km classic event. Birkigt, a leader on the young Alberta squad, mastered the track in 22:59.4 seconds, almost 25 seconds in front of Alysson Marshall of Vernon. Bryn Knight of Whitehorse kept the hometown crowd on their feet as she skied to a bronze, the first women's cross-country medal at the Canada Games since Lucy Steel dominated the 1991 Games in Charlottown.

Athletes to Watch

Chris Werrell (Burns Lake, BC) - Has consistently been one of the top 10 sprinters in Canada during the 2006-07 season. Has usually provided fast qualifying times and earned a sprint podium position for the first time at the 2007 Western Canadian Championships on Feb 10.

Nicholas Poirier (Club Defi, Quebec) - Nicholas placed 3rd at the 2006 National Championships in the Jr. Men's field. Was recently 6th at World Jr. Trials in Rossland and 9th at World Sr. Sprint trials in Canmore. He is part of a strong club and provincial program.

Memorable Moment of the Day

David Greer was the Team Yukon flag bearer in the Opening Ceremonies. He has two sister's who are competitive skiers, Janelle who finished 11th in the 7.5 today while his older sister Brittany is currently at the AUAA Cross Country Ski Championships in the USA representing the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. On the performance from the BC men - 'The guys have something to prove in tomorrow's sprint race,' noted Team BC coach Chris Manhard. 'You don't want to be in the same room as them right now.'

Bryn Knight is the first woman from the Yukon to win a cross-country medal since Lucy Steel won 3 gold and one silver at the 1991 CWG in Charlottown.

Next Competition

Father Mouchet, the founder of the T.E.S.T Cross Country Ski program in the 50's will be honoured by the Whitehorse Ski Club on Tuesday, March 6 at 1:30 before the start of the Sprint Heats. Mouchet was instumental in the introduction of northern youth to the benefits of sport, including 4 time Olympians Sharon and Shirley Firth. NorthwestTel will provide the first 300 spectators with cow bells to help raise the roof on Mt. McIntyre and cheer on the spectators.

Sprints in cross-country skiing feature heats of 6 skiers over a short spectator friendly course. The unique 550 meter loop course in Whitehorse will allow spectators to watch the race from start to finish. An outer and inner loop course design is the first of its type in Canada. Chandra Crawford, 1993 Canada Winter Games spirnt gold medallist, won Gold at the 2006 Winter Olympic Sprint event in Torino.

Highlights

Newfoundland Labrador were strong out of the gates, stealing 3 points in the 1st end and then went on to take another 5 point for a score of 8-2 heading into the break. The final score was 9-4 for the boys from the rock.

Highlights

Team QC had a wild one against Team NB. New Brunswick was up 3-2 after the 3rd end. Quebec scored 1 in the 4th end and then went on to steal single points in the next 3 ends. New Brunswick scored 1 in the 8th end and were able to steal a single in 9 to come within a point. Quebec ran the New Brunswick squad out of rocks for a 6-5 final.

Team BC vs. Team AB

Highlights

Leading Team British Columbia 7-5 coming home, Team Alberta was able to run the BC team out of rocks in the tenth end to win 7-6. The win give Alberta a 1-0 record in pool B, tied with Quebec and Newfoundland Labrador.

Highlights

With a hard-fought 7-5 over the team from the Northwest Territories, the win leaves Ontario with a 1-1 record in Pool A. Team NWT drops to 0-2.

Competition 5

Team PEI vs. Team SK

PEI 7, SK 4

Highlights

In a rollercoaster of a game, PEI was able to defeated Team Saskatchewan 7-4. The win gives PEI a 2-0 record and ties them with Manitoba for 1st place in Pool A. PEI will face Manitoba in draw #5 on Wednesday, March 7th at 8:30 a.m. WST.

Highlights

In their first game since winning the silver medal at the 2007 Canadian Junior Men's Championships, Brett Gallant and his team from Prince Edward Island started the Canada Games off with a strong win over Ontario. PEI was up 7-1 heading into the 5th end break. Ontario picked up a single point in the 6th and another in the 7th end, only to turn around an allow the PEI team to score another 6 points. The final score was 12-3 for PEI.

Highlights

Manitoba stormed out to take a 10-1 lead after 4 ends in their first game against Team Yukon. The young Yukon squad scored a point in the 5th and then manufactured back-to-back steals before Manitoba scored a duce in the 8th to take a 12-5 lead and the win.

Women's Sabre

Highlights

After the first round of the team competition in women sabre Alberta and Ontario are tied for first place. The 3 day round robin tournament will conclude on Wednesday with the individual finals on Thursday.

In the individual race in women sabre the lead is in the hands of Rhiannon Kirkland from Alberta with 11 victories but closely followed by Rebecca Howes and Kalya Lambie from Ontario with 10 victories the race for the top 8 is on

Men's Foil

Highlights

After the first round of the team competition in men's foil Alberta and Quebec are tied for first place. The 3 day round robin tournament will conclude on Wednesday with the individual finals on Thursday.

The west has taken a serious option on the individual race men's foil event with the top 5 places in the hand of Anthony Prymack (AB) Conner Wood (SK) Sinatro Raharjo (AB) Brendan Mann (SK) Sam Hardwicke -Brown (AB) the 4 day competition will conclude with the top 8 fencing off for the hardware on Thursday.

Men's Sabre

Highlights

This early in the men's team sabre event Manitoba is the lead with 3 victories but closely followed by Quebec who had one less match today. the make or break match between the 2 powers will be held on Tuesday

The front runner in the individual sabre with 11 victories no defeat is Max Stearns from Manitoba a member of the Canadian cadet team he is closely followed by his team mate Zacharie Allard with 9

Memorable Moment of the Day

A family affair, their father won gold at the Canada Games, their mother and step mother won Gold, the daughter was a medalist.Now sister and brother are back again he as a coach for Ontario she as a judge I am talking about one of the first family of fencing the Apsimon.

Highlights

Trailing 2-1 midway through the second period, the Quebec offence woke up in the last 30 minutes, scoring 11 unanswered goals on their way to a 12-2 win over New Brunswick. Marie-Philip Poulin led the way offensively for Quebec, scoring twice and adding six assists.

The underdog coming into the game, New Brunswick struck first when Marie-Pier Plourde scored just short of the four-minute mark in the opening period. Kayla Blackmore gave the Maritimers their second lead, at 2-1, early in the second period before Quebec started their comeback.

Highlights

The three-time defiending gold medallists, Ontario showed why it is considered the favourite for gold medal number four with a convincing 19-0 win over Newfoundland & Labrador. Seventeen of the 18 Ontario skaters recorded at least a point in the win.

The line of Jennifer Wakefield, Mallory Deluce and Rebecca Johnston combined for 12 points in the win. Wakefield led the way with four goals and three assists.

Highlights

Despite losing 6-0, the story of the game was Northwest Territories goaltender Leah Sulyma, who stopped 86 of 92 shots. Many of Sulyma's saves were of the spectacular variety, including her best, going post-to-post to rob Breann Frykas of a sure goal midway through the third period.

With Manitoba up only 1-0 through 20 minutes, despite firing more than 30 shots at NWT goaltender Leah Sulyma, Jenelle Kohancuk got her team going early in the second period, wiring a low shot past Sulyma for her first of two in the game.

Tian Terry Zhang from Manitoba defeated Montreals' Pierre-Luc Theriault in a tight 5 set match in Male U15. Zhang won the last set over Theriault 11-6 while having lost the two privous ones 13-11 and 11-8 respectively.

Highlights

Unrated Saqiqtaq and Niptanatiak from Nunavut defeated Nova-Scotia's Jollimore and Mccaffrey in the ladies U15 doubles. A very intense win for Nunavut going into a tigtht 5 set winning the fourth and fifth match 12-10.

Memorable Moment of the Day

Team Quebec will meet Team Alberta in Round 4 at 17h30. Danny Chang AB will meet Pierre-Luc Theriault in the male U15. Hannah Li AB will meet Marie-Andree Levesque from QC in the U18 female singles.

Team Ontario will meet Team BC in Round 4 at 17h30. Tony Liu and Andre Ho, both U15 male athletes will meet Michael Zhang and Terrence Leung respectively in the singles. Both matches are bound to be very interesting and intense games.
