Highlights
|
AB and QC stole the show with AB taking the top 2 in the men's category and first place in the women's. Rosanna Crawford won the competition with a one minute lead over second place Jessica Sedlock from BC. Crawford, sister of cross country ski sprint Olympic Gold medallist Chandra Crawford had 2 penalties on the shooting range but was still able to ski her penalty loops quickly enough to keep the lead. Tyson Smith and Yannick Letailleur battled it out for much of the competition each having 2 penalties on the shooting range.
The competition went off smoothly despite the cold weather. The temperature was within the legal limits of our sport and the courses were shortened slightly to reduce the time that the athletes were on the trail. Competition start time was adjusted to take advantage of the warmest part of the day.

|
Team Yukon came out strong against Alberta, taking a 4-0 leading after 3 ends. Team Alberta rallied and scored 2 in the 4th end and then had 5 consecutive steals to take a 11-4 lead on the hometown team. Yukon scored a single in the 10th end for a 11-5 final in Alberta's favour.
When asked how her team was playing, Nadine Chyz, skip of Team Alberta said, 'We started slow but got used to the ice and picked up our game. We were able to maintain our focus and pulled off the win.'

Team New Brunswick (NB) started off the scoring with a single in the 2nd end. Team Ontario (ON) followed suit by scoring 1 in the 3rd to tie the game at 1-1. Heading into the 5th end break the score was even at 2-2. After the break Team ON scored 1 in the 6th and then went on to steal the next 8 points ending the game after 9 ends with a 10-3 final.

Highlights
|
Team Newfoundland scored two points in the final end to win the game. Coming home tied 6-6, Team NL's skip Jen Cunningham made a double takeout on two rocks frozen in the back four foot to score 2 points to win the game. Team NL called a timeout before Cunningham's last shot. 'We were looking at playing to the backing,' said Cunningham, 'but after discussing it with our coach, Gary Oke, we decided the hit was the shot to play.'
The was the first game the Newfoundland Labrador foursome has played together. Cheryl Norman was added to the squad following the Newfoundland Labrador victory at the M&M Junior Canadian Championships, in which Julie Devereaux is a member of the team. Julie Devereaux was slotted to play skip on Team NL but after her victory at the Canadian Championships she is off to the Junior World Championships which start on Saturday, March 3, 2007.

|
Team BC was down 1 point with the hammer playing the final end of the game. Facing 2 Quebec rocks on the 4 foot; 1 top 4 foot and 1 back 4; BC had to play a tap to try and score 1 to force the game into an extra end. BC's rock made contact with the rock on the top 4 foot, but it did not have enough weight to remove both stones and left Team Quebec counting 2.
Russ Howard, Olympic Gold Medalist in curling from the 2006 Torino Olympics will be at Mt. McIntyre Recreational Centre to watch the curling an in particular his daughter, Ashley Howard, skip of Team New Brunswick.

In their first game of the Games, Team Nova Scotia (NS) came out strong. After scoring 3 points in the first end, Team NS went on to steal the next three ends scoring 7 points. Team Nunavut (NU) got on the board in the 5th end with a single point.
"I feel alright about the loss,' said Team Nunavut skip Teresa Tufts. 'This is our first Canada Games and we are playing our best. Our goal is to improve with every game we play.'
Team NS game out strong after the 5th end break and scored another 2 points. Team Nunavut conceded after 6 ends.

|
Kirk Rafuse of Team Nova Scotia kept his team in the game but Team Quebec proved too strong, firing 52 shots on Rafuse in a 4-1 victory. Quebec spread the scoring around, with Gabriel Dumont, Dave Labreque, Alexandre N‚ron and Jordan Caron getting singles.
Team Nova Scotia's Brett Frazee was part of a game highlight when he was hit by a member of Team Quebec into the glass, shattering one of the panes. Frazee, who was shaken up on the play, is OK.

Steve Stamkos continues to be the story of these Canada Winter Games when it comes to men's hockey. Stamkos scored two goals and added an assist to lead Ontario the win. Cody Hodgson made a nice feed to Stamkos, who one-timed home his second goal of the game for the play of the game.

It was easy to see why Jennifer Hartley (Balzac) recently earned a spot on Team Canada as the Alberta center continued her scoring streak, picking up two goals in the game. Dailyn Bell (Lacombe) picked up a pair of assists for Alberta.

Highlights
|
The 1500 men's event saw Spencer Zettler paired with fellow Ontario team mate Patrick Marsh. Racing in the last pair of the distance, they battled back and forth with Spencer edging Patrick by .24 seconds. When asked about the race Spencer simply said, ' I look up to him as a great skater. Having being paired with him pushed me the entire way'.
In an exciting race between the eventual Gold medal winner of the 1500m event, Keith Sultzer (AB) skated extemely hard against Clovis Cameron Auger (QC). With only one corner left to attack, Clovis went down while Keith carried on to an eventual first place finish. Keith was disappointed as they both had an exceptional race going. ' We have been skating against each other since we were 12 and it would have been great to get to the finish line together' Clovis ended in 30th place overall in the distance.

After falling in her first race of the Games, Shayla Heidinger(MB) overcame her disappointment by winning silver in the ladies 1000m. 'I was upset by my 500m peformance and wanted to do well today. I was so close to a medal in the 1500 yesterday that I just decided that I was going for it!'
Marie-Pier Gervais Moreau( QC) won her second medal of the Games winning the gold over Shayla Heidinger (MB). She beat Shayla by .27 seconds.

After falling in the 1500m earlier in the day, Clovis Auger (QC) skated with intensity and great determination. With a convincing win of over 2 seconds over Keith Sultzer(AB), he was finally able to stand on the podium to receive a Gold medal. Clovis and Keith were both considered favorites to represent Canada at the Junior Worlds in Innsbruck Austria this weekend. With disappointing overall finishes at the Junior World qualifier, both athletes were thrilled to get medals today.

Clovis Cameron Auger (Quebec) - After winnng the Gold today in the 3000m event, Clovis will be attacking the ice to try and secure a second gold medal. if he is paired with Keith Sulzer look for a potentially exciting finish.

Memorable Moment of the Day

After completing the 1500m event Keith Sulzer (AB)was asked how it felt. His surprising answer' if you can actually beleive it, I workerd up a sweat!'
Lucas Duffield of Alberta, won the silver medal in men's 500 event. 'The 1500m race is one of the most demanding on the body. I felt that the cold actually helped me skate.....I couldn't feel my legs!'
The skaters each have to do their longest distance of the Canada Games. The women do a 3000m while the men race a 5000m. If the weather is very cold, it will be very challenging for all skaters.

Highlights

The Quebec Team had strong results in the figure competition at the Canada Games Center taking the Top 4 placing. The Quebec Coach and Team Manager, Nathalie Lagrange and Lynn Pich‚ were both very happy with the final results: 'The girls did really well; we were expecting excellent results but having six girls in the Top 10 is quite amazing. We are very proud of the team and we are looking forward for the solo event later tonight', said Lagrange after the results were released. Team Ontario placed two swimmers in 5th and 6th place followed by Team Saskatchewan in 7th and Team BC in 8th.
