The term “athletics” refers to:
All events
All Track and Field events

Since 1967, nearly 50,000 athletes have participated in the Games with hundreds of thousands having engaged in try-outs and qualifying events. Over 90,000 coaches, officials and volunteers have been directly involved in the planning and staging of the Games.

The Canada Games have played a prominent role in developing some of Canada’s premier athletes. The Games have acted as a stepping stone for many of Canada’s celebrated athletes, including: Toller Cranston (1967), Bob Gainey (1971), Catriona LeMay Doan (1983 and 1987), Sylvie Daigle (1979), Bruny Surin (1985), Maryse Turcotte (1995), Hayley Wickenheiser and Marc Gagnon (1991), Marianne Limpert, Annie Pelletier and Anne Montminy (1989), Steve Nash (1993), Adam Van Koeverden (1997), Sidney Crosby (2003) and Alexandre Despatie (1997).

NEW: Canada Games Athlete Ambassador Program

In 2007, the Canada Games Council launched the Canada Games Athlete Ambassador Program which engages current and retired athletes in raising awareness and bringing increased promotion to the Canada Games Movement. Athlete Ambassadors are Canada Games alumni who have experienced success and want to share their experiences. All Athlete Ambassadors deliver their own distinct experiences and stories to selected Canada Games promotions, events and initiatives while delivering personal as well as Canada Games messages to audiences across Canada. Personal messages could include:

  • How has your support structure helped you achieve your goals?
  • Personal Canada Games experiences.
  • The gap in the Canadian Sport System that needs increased support to ensure Canada’s success internationally for years to come.

Desired Characteristics

  • Canada Games Alumni,
  • Strong oral communication skills,
  • Positive attitude and team player,
  • Knowledge of Canada’s sport system / Canada Games would be an asset.
