CANADA GAMES AWARDS
Four prestigious awards are presented at the Closing Ceremonies of each Canada Games. A fifth award, the Roland Michener Award, is given to two outstanding athletes at the Canadian Sport Awards ceremony following the Games.
CANADA GAMES FLAG
The Canada Games Flag incorporates the official Canada Games logo. In that logo, all provinces and territories coming together for the Games are represented by a gold ring encircling a maple leaf. The ring also symbolizes continuity, stability and strength, with the colour gold representing the quest for excellence.
At each Canada Games, points are awarded to every athlete in every sport based on performance and participation. At the end of the Games, the province or territory with the greatest number of points from all events is declared the champion and presented with the Canada Games Flag.
CENTENNIAL CUP
The Centennial Cup is awarded according to the pan-Canadian sport development objective of the Canada Games. It is presented at each Games to the provincial or territorial team that shows the greatest improvement in its final standing from the previous Canada Games, with the comparison being made on a winter to winter and summer to summer basis.
The Centennial Cup was donated to the Canada Games by the City of Kingston in 1970. It was crafted in part from 37 precious metals and wood laminations representing 10 provinces and two territories.
JACK PELECH AWARD
Jack Pelech was Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canada Games Council for 30 years, from 1971 to 2001. This award is presented by the Interprovincial Sport and Recreation Council to the provincial or territorial team whose athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff best combine competitive performance, good sportsmanship and a spirit of fair play, cooperation and friendship.
CLAUDE HARDY AWARD
Claude Hardy, who passed away on December 5, 1999, only missed two Canada Games from 1967 to 1999. He first competed as an athlete in 1967, moved to being a coach in 1969 and was Team Quebec Chef de Mission from 1971 on. At the 1999 Corner Brook Canada Winter Games, the last Games he participated in, it was announced that at each edition of the Games, an award in his name would serve to recognize the talents and dedication of a provincial or territorial Mission Team.
ROLAND MICHENER AWARD
The Roland Michener Canada Games Award was created in February 1992 in recognition of Roland Michener’s valuable contribution to Canada, for his passion for physical fitness and his belief in the power of sport in building unity and mutual trust. One of Canada’s Governor Generals, Roland Michener attended three Canada Games. The Roland Michener Award is presented every two years to two young Canada Games athletes, one male and one female, who exemplify strong leadership skills on and off the playing field, combined with an ongoing commitment to scholastic and athletic excellence. The award, a replica of the 1992 Roland Michener Commemorative stamp, is accompanied by a modest athletic bursary intended to assist with the ongoing training and living expenses of its recipients.
