Accessibility means that people of all abilities have the opportunity to participate fully in the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

The 2017 Canada Summer Games Host Society and Co-Hosts Commitment:

The 2017 Canada Summer Games Host Society and Co-Hosts are committed to ensuring equal access and participation for all people, regardless of their abilities. We are committed to treating all people in a way that allows them to maintain their dignity and independence. We believe in inclusion. We will strive to meet the needs of people who face accessibility challenges. We will identify and where possible remove or mitigate barriers.

The 2017 Canada Summer Games strive to:

  • Meet the communications needs of all clients

  • Allow assistive devices

  • Welcome support persons

  • Allow people with service animals

  • Review physical barriers to access and do what we can to mitigate restrictions

  • Let clients know when accessible services are not available

  • Invite clients to provide feedback

  • Train staff and volunteers on accessible customer service

The 2017 Canada Summer Games accessibility approach rests on three pillars:

  • Awareness

  • Respect

  • Active Offer

In keeping with its core mission statement, the Host Society and Co-Hosts are focussing on “Athletes first -  to offer them an exceptional experience”. The 2017 Games will host para athletes in sailing, swimming and athletics. These athletes will compete as part of the regular competition schedule. As such, the Host Society and Co-Hosts are committed to remove where possible, or mitigate barriers to the greatest extent possible, in order for these and all athletes to experience a successful Games.

For the spectator, consideration was  given to signage, path of travel, exposure to the elements, elevators, viewing line of sight, reserved accessible seating areas at all venues, transportation, service animals, sign language at opening and closing ceremonies, and of course accessible washrooms. Accessible parking in limited quantities is being provided adjacent to every venue. Consideration was also given to ticketing whereby people can identify special needs as part of their ticket purchase through Ticketmaster.
