August 5: Top 5 things to do today

By Kirsten Neil

So, in case you don’t know yet, the competitions are on a bit of a break. It’s Turnaround Day, which means we have to say goodbye to many athletes (we’re going to miss you!!!) and hello to a whole bunch more. But we wouldn’t leave you hanging with nothing to do. No, no, that’s not how we play. Today, you’re going to want to head to the hottest Festival in town for British Columbia night, and here are five reasons why...

1. Turn me Loose Loverboy

Umm, hello 80’s friends, tease that hair, grab some animal print and get out your leather pants (maybe not, it’s hot), because Loverboy is in town! Yes, this classic Canadian band is actually working on the weekend. They hit the main stage at around 9:20 p.m.

2. The AquaVan makes a splash

The Vancouver Aquarium’s AquaVan is arriving this weekend. This mobile aquarium features live animals, artifacts and activities along with educators who will encourage you to discover more about our connections to the seas.

3. Take me home, country rose

MC Madeline is in the house! Country music darling, Madeline Merlo is set to host today’s mainstage show as well as showcase her beautiful voice singing her hits like Whatcha Wanna Do About It and Honey Jack. She hits the stage at 6:55 p.m.

4. Viva Alex Cuba

Sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and powerful guitar riffs is what Alex Cuba has in store for you. This Latin Grammy/Juno winner, singer-songwriter has collaborated with the likes of Nelly Furtado and Ron Sexsmith and he’s going to bring his musical vision to the stage at around 8:05 p.m. tonight.

Because, obviously. Show starts at 10:30 p.m. Photo: Matt Duboff.

This is just a taste of what’s in store at British Columbia Day at The Forks. Enjoy the fest and don’t forget to share your photos with us. Tag ‘em with #JCG2017.

The games are here for a good time, not a long time, so you don’t want to miss a minute! Get your tickets before it’s too late.
