Two friendly faces who share a love of sport and community and most importantly, each other, will be welcoming athletes and coaches to Winnipeg this summer.
Larry and Maureen Switzer are volunteering together in athletics at the 2017 Canada Summer Games and have a deep connection to their roles by virtue of being former athletes.
“We both competed at a high level in our sport and feel great when our athletes do well and make the Canadian team like we did,” explained Larry, an accomplished cross country and track runner. “A lot of people helped us so we’ve been giving back for the last 38 years.”
For Larry that includes being president of the Winnipeg Optimist Athletics and playing a founding role in the Boeing Classic, which serves as Manitoba’s Provincial Indoor Track and Field Championship. He is a 2007 inductee in the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
The Switzers met in 1968 and Larry chased Maureen for two years before she agreed to a date.
“Actually, I went away to university in Oklahoma. She agreed to date when I returned. Must have missed me. Ha!”
Valentine’s Day will be at a wonderful golf course in Palm Springs followed by dinner with friends. The Switzers are self-described “golf nuts” who follow the Ryder Cup on television and by travelling to matches all over the world.
“My wife always plays great. I am usually a few strokes behind her. Maybe she will let me win on Valentine’s Day!”
We’re recruiting a team of 6,000 amazing volunteers! Will you be one of them? For more information on how you can volunteer for the 2017 Canada Summer Games, please visit our Volunteer Recruitment webpage.
