First called “kitten ball,” “pumpkin ball,” and “diamond ball,” it wasn’t until 1926 that the term “softball” was used. There have been many variations of the game over the years as well. In 1946, the National Fastball League was established and was considered to be the top male fastpitch league to ever be put together.
The 1969 Canada Summer Games in Halifax-Dartmouth were the inaugural Canada Summer Games and included men’s and women’s softball. Men’s softball was not played at the 2009 and 2013 Canada Summer Games, but will return to the program in 2017.
Each province and territory may field one male team and one female team. Teams will be made up of 15 athletes.
