Over the month of May, students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 from across Manitoba and Kenora, Ontario submitted some great names for the 2017 Canada Summer Games Mascot as part of the Mascot Naming Challenge. A committee of Host Society staff and volunteers narrowed it down to three finalists, and over 1,000 people from across the world voted for their favourite to determine the winner.
The winning name, Niibin (NEE-BIN), submitted by Taylor Schepp, a Grade 3 student from St. Emile Catholic School, was announced this morning on CTV Morning Live.
As the winner of the naming challenge, Taylor will:
- be an official torchbearer in the 2017 Canada Summer Games Torch Relay,
- get a visit with the official 2017 Canada Summer Games mascot, and
- receive a 2017 Canada Summer Games Gear package!
“Niibin is the Anishinaabe word for ‘it is summer.’ I like the name Niibin because it sounds cool, and because it is the Canada Summer Games,” explained Schepp.
Connect with Niibin this summer at events and festivals across the province or request a Mascot appearance at your upcoming event.
