Minimize Waste To establish a zero waste to landfill program for the Games, we have the following practices in action or in development: Accreditation Test printing will be completed prior to the mass print to ensure efficiency and avoid duplication in the printing of badges. Canada Winter Games Host Society Offices Instead of constructing a brand-new building, the Host Society offices are located in the classrooms of a former school that are currently being renovated. The Host Society offices contain some donated reused materials, including some used and donated furniture from the 2017 Winnipeg Summer Games and used computer equipment from the City of Red Deer. In the Host Society lunchroom, reusable cutlery and dishes are provided for employees to share, instead of single-use disposable items Diversion stations are set up throughout the office to allow staff and visitors to sort their recycling. The office has a battery recycling program. Printer cartridges are recycled. Volunteer application forms are electronic in order to reduce paper consumption. Following the Games, the Host Society office building will become the office for Cultural Services for the City of Red Deer. The Host Society is partnered with organizations that will take fabric signage and recycle them into jerseys, backpacks etc. Festivals and Ceremonies The clean-up crew will use proper waste disposal methods. Gary W. Harris Celebration Plaza Benches are installed and the seat and backrest are made of 100% recycled plastic from Central Alberta. Medical Services The Polyclinic is using the Red Deer College nursing department’s existing equipped medical rooms. Medical supplies is shared between venues each week, instead of buying supplies for each venue. If a venue is no longer used after week one, their supplies will be transferred to a venue that opens in week two. Merchandise Electronic receipts are sent for all merchandise purchases. In addition, there is one point of sales (POS) machine that does not print card receipts and instead sends them electronically. For purchases made at physical Games Gear kiosks, items are packaged in reusable bags. All soft plastic packaging from merchandise is currently being collected to be recycled. There are no single use items in our merchandise, such as thunder sticks. NOVA Chemicals is providing bags that are made out of recycled plastic. Sport All results from the sporting events are electronic. The sustainability committee is researching effective ways to recycle the brass components from bullets on the Biathlon range. Ticketing Opening and closing ceremonies have a print online option. Venues All City venues will have composting. This includes Collicutt, Setter’s Place, Downtown Arena and Kinsmen. The Collicutt Centre uses compostable and recyclable foodware. Warehouse Coroplast signs are recycled with the City of Red Deer’s existing recycling program. All metal and cardboard at the warehouse is recycled. The Host Society has a partnership with the company that we share the warehouse with in order to use their bin to recycle metal.
