This is Our Moment! 2019 Canada Winter Games Kick Off in Red Deer
The 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society is ready to host the nation for the largest multi-sport and cultural event for youth in Canada. Featuring over 150 events in 19 sports and a major arts and cultural festival, the 2019 Canada Winter Games welcomes up to 3,600 athletes, managers and coaches from today until March 3 for the 27th edition of the Canada Games. Tonight, the Opening Ceremony kicks off the Games starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Centrium in Red Deer.
“We are incredibly excited to kick off the 2019 Canada Winter Games tonight and welcome the nation to Red Deer and central Alberta,” said Lyn Radford, 2019 Games Board Chair. “Since being awarded the 2019 Games in September 2014, the Host Society has worked tirelessly to deliver a life-shaping Games experience for all participants. We can’t wait to show the rest of Canada the gusto and hospitality that our region is known for.”
“Our athletes have worked hard to make it to these games and represent their provinces and territories. This is their moment to shine on the Canadian stage,” said the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, federal Minister of Science and Sport. “We can’t wait to watch them perform and we are cheering them on.”
“I am honoured to have this opportunity, on behalf of all Albertans, to celebrate dedicated and talented young athletes from across this country. They are here because of their hard work as well as the support of their families, coaches and officials. They will have the time of their lives because of the exceptional work of the Host Committee. I can think of no better place for these athletes to compete than Red Deer and our great province,” said Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism for the Government of Alberta.
“From coast to coast to coast across our great country, we are thrilled to welcome our fellow Canadians to Red Deer, Alberta, for the 27th edition of the Canada Games,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “Our competition venues, downtown festivals, businesses, volunteers and local citizens are all ready to host you and we welcome you and the opportunity to invite you to experience the Red Deer we are and are becoming.”
“Over the next two weeks, Red Deer will be the capital of athletic excellence in Canada”, said Tom Quinn, Canada Games Council Chairman. “Just as the athletes have shown dedication, hard work, and passion to be chosen to represent their province or territory, so have the countless individuals from the 2019 Canada Games Host Society and Red Deer community who are prepared to wow us with thrilling competitions, cultural events and hospitality. You can all be proud of your achievements!”
2019 Canada Games Medal Unveiling
During a press conference prior to the Opening Ceremony, the medal design of the 2019 Games was unveiled.
Designed by Tyler Vreeling with guidance from the Medal Design Committee, the medal and accompanying neck ribbon draws inspiration from the bountiful and varied landscape that encompasses central Alberta. The medal design tells the story of the 2019 Canada Winter Games, and most importantly, the story of the athletes. The medal and neck ribbon pay homage to the Indigenous and Métis communities within central Alberta. Throughout the Games, over 1,000 medals will be awarded. Teck, Canada’s largest diversified resource company, is the exclusive medals supplier for the Canada Games. As a proudly Canadian company for over 100 years, Teck is honoured to help celebrate the achievements of the athletes by providing the medals.
“We are proud to celebrate the Canada Games’ athletes whose drive and dedication are an inspiration to Canadians from coast to coast,” said Don Lindsay, President and CEO, Teck.
“We are thankful for Tyler’s vision and execution of the medal design, which resulted in a design that represents our beautiful province and rich heritage,” said Radford.
