To support the overall sustainability of the organization, the 2019 Canada Winter Games has developed a sustainable purchasing guide. This guide is intended to help procurement departments make responsible purchases of everything from food to promotional items.

  • The guide provides useful criteria for making purchases: instead of only considering price, decisions are also based on lifecycle, quality, and sustainability features.
  • Among other things, recommendations include choosing products which have minimal packaging, are produced locally, are ethically manufactured and/or are recyclable.
  • The purchasing guide will also be adapted by the City of Red Deer in order to create a version for community use after the 2019 Games and will hopefully be used as a template for other communities.
  • This guide covers the 3 pillars for sustainability: environmental, economic and social.
