CGC Statement on Decision by Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation to Withdraw Support from 2022 Canada Games

Indigenous peoples, their voices, and their experiences within sport have been systemically excluded for generations. Our goal as the Canada Games Council (CGC) is to work alongside Indigenous peoples, our Government, Sport, and Corporate partners, and our Host Societies, to explore how we can better contribute to Indigenous communities, sport participation and sport development through the Canada Games Movement. We are still on a learning path.

The CGC is aware of the decision of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation to withdraw its support for the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. This relationship was held through the Indigenous Partnership Council (IPC), with the goal of reinforcing the presence and engagement of Indigenous peoples in the events leading up to and during the Games.

The CGC recognizes the importance of Indigenous peoples’ lived experience in working with Host Societies. We sincerely welcome the opportunity to listen and explore ways to create safe and culturally appropriate spaces and understand Indigenous peoples’ experience with the Canada Games.

We remain committed to working alongside Indigenous peoples in genuine, meaningful and respectful ways to build a more inclusive Canada Games Movement in which everyone feels safe, welcome and valued.
