Scott Russell has a voice most Canadians recognize and associate with iconic sporting moments in our history, having recently retired after 40 years as a CBC broadcaster. 

His early days as a sports broadcaster included on-site coverage of the Canada Games, which he reported on multiple times for CBC – stories he fondly recalls to this day. 

"The Canada Games are a national treasure and an expression of the youthful potential of the country,” Russell said. “I am excited to act as an advocate and ambassador for the continued success of the Games."

Russell credits the Cape Breton 1987 Canada Winter Games as a major stepping stone in his broadcasting career. It marked his first live play-by-play opportunity.

The Canadian Screen Award and Gemini Award-winning broadcaster went on to cover 17 Olympic Games, including seven as host, and also led CBC’s coverage of seven Paralympic Games, among many other major sporting events.

Since retirement, Scott has shifted into governance and advisory roles, notably as Chancellor at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, an Honourary Board Member of the Paralympic Foundation of Canada, as well as a lifetime member of the selection committee at Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

While Russell is just beginning his tenure on the CGC Board, he outlined his aspirations for the years ahead.

“My hope is that the Canada Games will continue to thrive as a nation building tool and one of the most inclusive sporting events in the world,” he said. “The ambition would be to have the unifying power of the Games reflected in an increased funding model and national profile in order to ensure their vital importance to the Canadian story.”
