Canada Games Council Announces Sport Program Updates

The Canada Games Council (CGC) has recently announced updates to both sport programs for the upcoming 2023 and 2025 Canada Games.

2023 Canada Winter Games
The CGC has added both Fencing and Table Tennis to the 2023 Canada Winter Games sport program.

As a result of Artistic Swimming moving from the 2023 Canada Winter Games to the 2025 Canada Summer Games, quota became available to add sports to the 2023 Games. Through an evaluation of existing sport selection data and consultation with the 2023 Canada Games Host Society, the Canada Games Council Sport Committee has made the decision to add Fencing and Table Tennis to the program.

2025 Canada Summer Games
Subsequently, the CGC has also announced the initial 90% of sports and disciplines selected for the 2025 Canada Summer Games that will be hosted in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The CGC’s Sport Committee adhered to a transparent and objective sport selection process in which it analyzed all sports and disciplines that wished to be included in the 2025 Canada Summer Games. The total number of sports/disciplines selected for the Games are based on a participant quota that each Games must follow.

The CGC ran a sport selection process that included a core sport review following the 2017 Canada Summer Games, and an assessment sport selection process, in order to determine the initial sport program for the 2025 Canada Summer Games.

The core sport review is designed to ensure that the core sports remain aligned with the mission, vision and values of the Canada Games and the Canadian sport system. Core sports generally meet all of the goals of the Canada Games sport program and provide the Canada Games and the Provincial/Territorial Governments with a stable sport program. The core sport program accounts for up to 70% of the overall Games quota.

The assessment sport selection process is designed to identify sports that generally meet most of the goals of the Canada Games sport program, but that lack alignment in a minority of areas that don’t allow it to achieve core status. The assessment process provides sports not previously on the Canada Games sport program the opportunity to be selected for the program through an objective evaluation.

The assessment sport selection process is used to select the remaining 30% of the Games quota. Today’s announcement represents 90% of the final 2025 Canada Summer Games sport program. The final 10% of the program will be selected by the eventual host society (known as host choice sport) and by the CGC Sport Committee, in conjunction with the host society, following the award of the 2025 Canada Summer Games.

The first 90% of the sports selected to the 2025 Canada Summer Games program are as follows:

  • Artistic Swimming
  • Athletics (including Para & Special Olympics)
  • Baseball (Male)
  • Basketball (Female & Male)
  • Beach Volleyball (Female & Male)
  • Canoe Kayak - Sprint
  • Cycling - Mountain Bike
  • Cycling - Road (including Para)
  • Diving
  • Sailing
  • Soccer (Female & Male)
