I am a Sprint Canoe/Kayak athlete from Mississauga, Ontario. I am 20 years old and currently studying Kinesiology at Dalhousie University and a member of the Canadian Canoe/Kayak Team.
My most memorable Canada Games experience was being able to go watch the other sports and teams compete. We became big fans of the Team Ontario girls basketball team...they were unstoppable. We very rarely get to watch other athletes at the same level as us compete, I think as a sport community it brought all of us a little closer.
I am inspired by the impossible, I believe there are no limits to what someone can do and pushing those limits is what I aim to do. My hero would be Adam van Koeverden, he has been one of the best athletes in the world for about as long as I have been alive (he is still young), having that much success for such a long period of time is very inspiring to me. My favourite quote is by 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist John Wood,
My favourite quote: "what I enjoy most about paddling in a race is winning. But that's not necessarily what I enjoy most about paddling. I get real satisfaction out of training: just spinning along out of doors."
Sport has played a huge role in my life since the Canada Games. I think the main things I have taken away from the Games is the reminder to have fun. I was with my best friends from Ontario and around the county, we were racing fast (having just competed at the junior world championships 2 weeks prior), and we were enjoying ourselves, meeting new people, watching new sports, being a part of the Games reminded us why we love sport.
My advice for athletes competing at future is to focus on your competition but don't ignore all the amazing things happening around. Go check out a different sport and meet new people!
