The Power of the Games
Since 1967, the Canada Games Council and the Canada Games Movement have brought together athletes, volunteers, artists, and communities from coast to coast to coast. These are more than just sporting events. They are celebratory gatherings where sport meets culture, community, and the shared identity of Canada.
More Than Medals
Yes, the Canada Games have helped launch legends like Steve Nash, André De Grasse, Hayley Wickenheiser and our Board Chair, Catriona Le May Doan. But the real strength of the Games lies in much more, including:
• The sport infrastructure left behind in host communities;
• The thousands of volunteers, local leaders and community builders who step up;
• The economic and tourism opportunities generated in every region;
• The cultural and arts events that ride alongside the sports;
• The unity, pride, and resilience we build as a nation when we come together.
Opportunity in a Changing Fiscal Landscape
In the new federal budget context, the sport sector faces challenges, and the Games see opportunity. While we are aware of funding constraints across parts of the sport system, the Canada Games Movement has always been about adaptability, leadership and national impact. With a federal emphasis on infrastructure and community building, we believe that the Games are uniquely positioned to contribute. We travel from coast to coast to coast, unifying the country, building communities, developing athletes and leaders — creating thousands of lasting legacies.
Our Role & Vision
As stewards of the Canada Games Movement, we at the Canada Games Council commit to:
• Ensuring that every edition of the Games leaves behind sport facilities, volunteer capacity, and community pride;
• Championing the value of the Games as a multi-sector catalyst for sport, for tourism, for culture, and for regional development;
• Working with federal, provincial, and territorial partners to secure sustainable support, so the Games can continue for the next seven generations;
• Remaining transparent, accountable and mission-driven, always focused on how the Games support Canadians first.
Why It Matters
Because now more than ever, Canada needs the Canada Games.
In times of challenge, we need the spirit of sport and community to rise. Sport unites the country like nothing else can, lifting our shared pride, hope and optimism. Through the Canada Games, we:
• Build resilience in young athletes, volunteers, and communities;
• Create welcoming spaces and opportunities for under-represented groups;
• Amplify local tourism and economic vitality in host regions;
• Strengthen the threads that bind our national identity.
Join Us
We strengthen the fabric of Canada through the power of sport. We invite our sport partners, communities, governments and Canadians to stand with us, because when the Games succeed, we all succeed.
Let’s continue to build strong, inclusive communities — through sport, culture, and unity — for today, and for the next generation.
